About the Salary After Tax Calculator

This calculator estimates take-home pay by subtracting federal income tax withholding, Social Security and Medicare (FICA) taxes, and any state income tax and pre-tax deductions from gross salary.

It is an approximation. Actual withholding depends on filing status, W-4 settings, local taxes, and benefit elections, and the final tax owed is settled when you file a return.

How this works

Take-home = gross − federal tax − FICA − state tax.

Assumptions

  • Uses simplified 2024 federal brackets and the standard deduction.
  • FICA: 6.2% Social Security (up to the wage base) + 1.45% Medicare.
  • State tax is a flat-rate estimate and is not state-specific.
  • This is an estimate, not tax advice.

Frequently asked questions

What are FICA taxes?
Payroll taxes for Social Security (6.2% of wages up to an annual cap) and Medicare (1.45% of all wages, with an additional 0.9% above a high-income threshold).
Why might my real paycheck differ?
State and local taxes, health insurance premiums, retirement contributions, and W-4 adjustments all change withholding and are simplified or excluded here.
Is take-home pay the same as my tax bill?
No. Withholding is an estimate collected through the year; your actual tax is reconciled on your annual return, producing a refund or balance due.
