About the Investment Return Calculator

This calculator estimates the ending value of an investment from a starting amount, optional regular contributions, an assumed annual return, and a time horizon. It also shows the total invested versus the projected gain.

Assumed returns are not guaranteed. Markets fluctuate, and investing carries the risk of loss, including loss of principal. The result is a simplified projection to illustrate how contributions and time interact, not a forecast.

How this works

FV = P(1 + r)ⁿ

Assumptions

  • The annual return is a fixed average.
  • Returns compound annually.
  • Past performance does not guarantee future results.

Frequently asked questions

What return rate should I enter?
There is no correct number. Some people model a range of scenarios (for example a lower and a higher figure) to see how sensitive the outcome is to the assumption.
Does this account for inflation?
Not directly. To view results in today’s dollars, use a return net of expected inflation, sometimes called a real return.
Are taxes and fees included?
No. Investment fees and taxes on gains reduce real-world returns and are not modeled here.
